Shinjiro Takagi
President of the East Asian Association of Insolvency Law & Practice

The East Asia Symposium on Business Restructuring & Insolvency Law and Practice was held in Korea (Seoul), in April 2009, in China (Beijing), in October2010, and 3rd East Asia Symposium on Business Restructuring & Insolvency Law and Practice will be held from 29th to 30th of October in 2011, in Japan (Tokyo). 1st Symposium was held by Insolvency Institute of Korea, and 2nd Symposium was held by Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, China University of Political Science and Law. We have established The East Asian Association of Insolvency & Restructuring in April 2011 before holding 3rd Symposium, and The Association shall hold The Symposium annually in order of Japan, Korea, and China.

The purpose of starting these actions is that academics, practitioners and economic experts in the forefront of insolvency law and practice in China, Korea and Japan, will meet, exchange experiences and views, and interact mutually to work hard together and polish up insolvency law and practice to be more clear and economically rational in the three countries in East Asia in which scale of economy is comparable with United States of America and European countries.

We are preparing to report and exchange views based on instances regarding to six themes, “M&A/Pre-package”, “Enterprise Value Related to Reorganization Plan”, “DIP Finance”, “Security Interest”, “Labor & Legacy Costs”, “Cross-Border Cases”, in this symposium.

Official language in this symposium is Chinese, Korean and Japanese, not English. Because many practitioners who are active in the field in the three countries, will be able to participate the symposium by removing an obstacle of language and it will be clear that not participants from English-speaking countries but professionals in the three countries in East Asia take the initiative of the symposium.

We receive considerable financial support to hold this symposium from large financial institutions (including securities companies), large law firms and advisory companies belonging to large audit corporation group, because we have to hire interpreters for simultaneous interpretation in Chinese, Korean and Japanese, and each host country, where 1st and 2nd symposium was held in, bore the expenses of these symposiums. I appreciate your considerable support once again.

I look forward to seeing you on the symposium held in Japan (Tokyo) in October 2011, and expect that the symposium will contribute to strengthen friendship between the professionals in the three countries.
